Is the fall of Pokrovsk, Ukraine's key eastern stronghold, inevitable?

Al Jazeera

Is Trump losing patience with Putin? Will sanctions against Russian oil giants hurt Putin? Is the fall of Pokrovsk, Ukraine's key eastern stronghold, inevitable? Pokrovsk, a key fortress and logistical hub for Ukrainian forces in the eastern region of Donbas, has been under siege for almost two years. But in recent weeks, tens of thousands of Russian soldiers have been storming the town around the clock, taking over the streets where buildings are mostly reduced to bombed-out, deserted ruins. They use reconnaissance drones and satellite images to identify gaps in Ukrainian defences and use tiny groups of soldiers who are attacked and killed in droves by Ukrainian drones .

Russian forces gain foothold in strategic Ukrainian town

BBC News

Russian troops are making a concerted push in eastern Ukraine and have gained a foothold in the strategic hub of Pokrovsk, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says. Moscow's soldiers outnumber Kyiv's 8-1 in the area and Ukraine cannot match that, Zelensky added while insisting Russia had not yet achieved the planned result. Russia has been trying to capture Pokrovsk for two years. The key supply and transport hub provides supplies and reinforcements to the eastern front - and it would get Moscow closer to occupying the entirety of the Donetsk region. It would also put towns of the heavily fortified fortress belt - Kramatorsk, Slovyansk, Kostyantynivka and Druzhkivka - within easier reach of Moscow.

How much of Europe's oil still comes from Russia? A Russian drone has killed two Ukrainian journalists and wounded another in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, according to their outlet and the regional governor of the Donetsk region. Freedom Media, a state-funded news organisation, said on Thursday that Olena Gramova, 43, and Yevgen Karmazin, 33, had been killed by a Russian Lancet drone while in their car at a petrol station in the industrial city. Another reporter, Alexander Kolychev, was hospitalised after the attack. Freedom Media said that Gramova, a native of Yenakiieve in the Donetsk region, had originally trained as a "finance specialist", but turned to journalism in 2014, the year when Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula, and started arming a separatist movement in Donetsk and Luhansk in the Donbas.

Ukrainian forces destroyed dozens of Russian warplanes with a drone attack on air bases deep within Russian territory on Sunday. Russia reports Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow ahead of May 9 events

Al Jazeera

Russia has reported that it repelled a drone attack on Moscow as the capital city prepares to host a major military parade with foreign leaders in attendance. Russia's air defence systems intercepted "four drones flying towards Moscow", Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Monday. The attack appears intended to unsettle Moscow's preparations for events marking the end of the Great Patriotic War, commonly known as World War II elsewhere, on May 9. President Vladimir Putin has called for a 72-hour ceasefire to mark the occasion starting on May 8. However, Ukraine has demanded instead a 30-day truce aimed at agreeing to a permanent ceasefire in the conflict that began when Russia invaded in February 2022. Sobyanin said in a post on Telegram that there were no reports of injuries or damage.

'Easter truce' in Russia's Ukraine war marked by accusations of violations

Al Jazeera

Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of breaching an "Easter truce" announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Ukraine said was being violated from the moment it started. In a surprise announcement on Saturday, Putin ordered his forces to "stop all military activity" along the front line in the war against Ukraine, citing humanitarian reasons. The 30-hour cessation of hostilities would have been the most significant pause in the fighting throughout the three-year conflict. But just hours after the order was meant to have come into effect, air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv and several other Ukrainian regions, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accusing Russia of having maintained its attacks and engaging in a PR stunt. Russia's Ministry of Defence also alleged on Sunday that Ukraine had broken the truce more than 1,000 times.
